Rock Band VR, is it too easy?
First, let’s make one thing clear: Rock Band VR is not similar to traditional Rock Band at all. Now, before you fret, classic guitar mode is available, and I will talk about this later. Let’s discuss Game Play.

Price: 49.99 USD
The Amazon Bundle with Guitar is going for 69.99 USD

TLDR: Not your average Rock Band games, you have more freedom, it can be as hard as you choose or as easy as you like. There is a good set list, the experience is immersive, you will feel like a rock star, you will get to know your fans, you will love it. There is a classic mode, but it’s not on stage

Game Play:

The game starts you out with a tutorial, and you should start this game with the frame of mind that it is NOT the Rock Band VR you know and love. It’s not bad by any standard, but it is different. You will only have control of guitar, no drums, no bass. You can sing into the virtual mic, but it does not affect your performance score.

With the guitar, your ultimate goal is getting the right beats, mixing the correct “chords”, maxing out your combo. There is no fixed patterns or keys you have to follow, you have a lot of creative freedom to produce what sounds the best to you. This game is easy to start, but very difficult to master.

Once you have learned the basic, you can advance your skill by moving up and down the keys in Virtuoso mode. It is not as easy as it sounds! My fingers were definitely getting a full work out playing this.

The freedom that this game offers makes it very good fit for VR. In traditional game play, you spend most of the play time concentrating on hitting the right keys, memorizing the patterns, you don’t get to enjoy the environment. And that game play makes sense because there isn’t an environment for you to enjoy. In VR, you are ON stage, you ARE performing, you’re a rock star! So, there are a lot of elements to take in, to enjoy and to be immersive. In the crowd, you will start spotting the regulars, the groupies, the fans. The venue is mysterious, trendy, raw, and it changes. This game is designed for VR and it works so well. I know a lot of Rock Band fans are disappointed classic mode isn’t the full game play, and I almost feel that this game would be received a lot better if it didn’t have the Rock Band brand attached. There is a classic mode though.

You can play the classic mode in VR, it is available, in its full challenge. The only difference is, you’re not on stage, the keys are simply coming at you in VR. The whole set list can be play on classic mode. Speaking of set list, this is the set list:
